Mardin's 1500-year-old Mor Behnam Kırklar Church is hosting 'In the Fresh Shadow of Ancient Word,' a monumental art installation honoring Syriac cultural heritage and the dedication of Hieromonk Gabriel Akyüz, who served the church for 41 years. This special exhibition, which opened its doors on August 16, is of great significance for bringing the region's deep-rooted faith and cultural history together with conceptual art, offering visitors a unique experience of tribute.
Metal Lids and Resonant Hymns
The installation, curated by Özcan Geçer, transforms the sacred space at the heart of the church into an artistic stage. The project, the product of three months of intensive work, features lids laser-engraved on metal, inspired by the 17 books written by Father Gabriel Akyüz on Syriac history, an ancient censer, stained glass work, and special light and sound designs. Visitors can experience this monumental work accompanied by the 'Kuryeleyson' hymn, integrated with the church's atmosphere.
The Intersection of History and Art
Mardin, one of Southeastern Anatolia's oldest settlements, is considered one of the world's rare urban archaeological sites where past and present intertwine [3]. The city attracts thousands of local and foreign tourists annually with its rich cultural heritage [1]. The Kırklar Church, which also hosted an exhibition on migration and identity concurrently with the Mardin Biennial held from May 15 to June 21 this year [2], continues to refresh cultural memory with this new installation.
A Debt of Gratitude to a Living Culture
The physical absence of Gabriel Akyüz, who retired after a serious illness, is symbolically filled by this monument of tribute. The project, realized with the support of the Foundation of Mardin Syriac Ancient Deyrulzafaran Monastery and Churches, stands out as an artistic expression of the Syriac community's gratitude for its own values.
