Underneath the ancient royal palace complex of Angkor Thom in Cambodia, a vast water management system dating to the 12th century and rare stone carvings depicting daily life scenes from the Khmer Empire era have been uncovered [1]. This monumental substructure, revealed through excavations led by archaeologists from the Apsara National Authority, holds significant importance in illustrating the engineering prowess and court life during the peak of the Khmer Empire under King Jayavarman VII.
Engineering Marvel Beneath the Palace Walls
Researchers focused on a large reservoir within the palace complex known as 'Pool 11,' measuring 65 meters in length and 30 meters in width. Excavations uncovered three ancient drainage systems with a total of six water outlets located at the base of the palace walls [3]. These systems were designed to channel rainwater accumulated in the palace courtyard during monsoon seasons into the surrounding moat. Sediment layers reaching approximately 3.5 meters in depth indicate that the system became buried over time due to natural processes and the growth of vegetation.
Life Scenes Carved in Stone
One of the most exciting aspects of the discovery was the detailed bas-reliefs found on the western wall of the pool. These stone carvings depict people navigating rivers in boats, fish, and various aquatic creatures. The artistic works offer a rare glimpse into the social and cultural life of the period, documenting the Khmer people's close relationship with nature and water. The same engineering skill evident in the construction of massive temples like Angkor Wat is also reflected in these water systems [2].
Reanimating the Ancient Network
The Apsara Authority is preparing restoration projects aimed at preserving these physical remains and partially restoring the ancient water system to functionality. Planned efforts include reinstating the original drainage function. This will help prevent flooding at the palace ruins during the annual rainy season and ensure the safe transmission of this historical heritage to future generations.
