Spanish and Egyptian archaeologists have unearthed an extraordinary 4,400-year-old tomb in the Saqqara Necropolis, southwest of Cairo, dating back to Egypt's Fifth Dynasty (2494-2345 BCE). The tomb, featuring original colors and vivid reliefs remarkably preserved to this day, is of immense significance for showcasing the social ascent of a high-ranking official and the daily life of ancient Egypt. The discovery was made through excavations conducted in collaboration with the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt. This double-chapel monumental tomb, known as a mastaba, is particularly noteworthy.
The Eternal Union of Father and Son
Researchers have identified the tomb as having been commissioned by Yunmen, a high-ranking official who served during the reign of Pharaoh Djedkare Isesi [1]. Yunmen chose to be buried alongside his father, Iti, who was a lower-ranking official, thus sharing his eternal resting place with him [3]. Archaeologists believe this represents a rare instance illustrating how a family from the provinces could rise within the central bureaucracy and gain social status.
Vibrant History on the Walls
The tomb, located in the Mariette area of northern Saqqara, stands out due to the exceptional state of preservation of its internal reliefs [2]. Scenes depicting agricultural activities, sacrificial rituals, donkeys, and other animal figures on the walls vividly portray the daily life of millennia ago, much like a cinematic narrative. Many of these scenes retain their original colors, offering unparalleled data for studying the artistic genius and painting techniques of ancient Egypt.
The ongoing work, led by Spanish Egyptologist Josep Cervello, head of the excavation team, aims to understand the street layout, human movement, and cult rituals within the ancient necropolis. Mapping and settlement plan analyses in the area indicate the presence of two more mastaba tombs nearby that have yet to be excavated. This suggests that future excavation seasons may unveil new surprises regarding Saqqara's mysterious history.
