According to a statement by the Greek Ministry of Culture, archaeologists have unearthed a school complex in the ancient Macedonian city of Mieza where Alexander the Great was educated during his youth. Dated to approximately 2,400 years ago, this structure is identified as the site where Aristotle gave lessons to the young Alexander and other Macedonian nobles [1].

An Educational Sanctuary of Royal Splendor

Archaeologist Angeliki Kottaridi, who is leading the excavations, stated that the complex consists of two large banquet halls, a sports area, a stadium, and a classroom equipped with stone benches. The mosaics decorating the floors and the majestic columns demonstrate the significant budget King Philip II allocated for his son's education. It is noted that the architectural details of the school bear striking similarities to the royal palace at Aigai.

Records by the ancient author Plutarch confirmed the existence of this school and Aristotle's tenure there centuries ago [2]. Archaeological findings support that this is precisely the location indicated by these historical texts. In particular, four ancient styli (writing instruments) found during the excavations offer researchers a chance to envision the daily educational routines of the students of that period.

Security and Strategic Location

Researchers evaluate that the school's establishment approximately 43 kilometers away from the capital, Pella, was no coincidence. Considering the risks of political assassination at the time, it is thought that the school may have been built in a secluded location for Alexander's safety. The education provided by Aristotle, ranging from natural sciences to philosophy, reflects the influence of one of the ancient world's most brilliant minds on a young leader [5].
